A Tree Grows in Tarrytown

I have been waiting my entire career to tackle a staircase in its entirety. It’s the truth. I’ve always seen the two walls as a single connecting canvas, but it was finding the right client to see it through my eyes. Here’s what the layout looks like. Hmmm…..How to make the subject matter work? And what exactly is the subject? My client was oh so prepared. She had created a visual feast in her exquisite landscaping and wanted to bring that vision into the foyer to warm the space. When we first met, she had dozens of photos printed out of the areas that were important to her, taken during different times of day and from a choice of angles. Center stage was a large maple that was take top billing. Drawings approved, I could not wait to start. Walk through the project with me. Here is the bottom section completed. A Gallery Opens in Trumbull

A new gallery is opening its doors soon in Trumbull. I am so psyched because I will have work hanging on its walls! And what a gallery it is. A totally new concept. The works of art are custom headboards. Located at 1 Trefoil Drive in my hometown of Trumbull, I.M.Smitten will be hosting a private Friends and Family Party November 5th to show off its unique collection of custom headboards. The brainchild of owner George Holley and his partners Phairot Iamnaita and Holly Sutton Darr, the collection includes innovative features such as built in reading lights and USB ports. Design Director Holly Sutton Darr has collected an impressive array of Connecticut artists and artisans to execute their talents on the headboards. Here I am working on one of my favorites, a queen size board showing Italianate Scrollwork. My boards include some textured finishes. I’ll also show you a few of my favorite “mural” boards. The collection of artists brings wonderful visual energy to the gallery. There is hand painted glass, plaster and wonderfully distressed finishes. Fields of Lavender

The idea of the mural in this exquisite home was found in a combined love of the owner for color and flowers. The air of Provence in the rounded foyer nestled beneath the second floor turret made the choice of lavender fields, punctuated by tall standing sentinels of sunflowers, an easy one. Needing to be able to look at all the walls at the same time, I photographed it to capture all my paintable areas and then drew on this template. It made it easy for my client to see the mural as a single piece, rather than all the small choppy areas you notice when windows and doors and stairs intrude. The result? A total immersion in a sea of color when you come in the front door. Best to show you the video first. Here are a few still shots to see the details. The Dragon’s Tail

Since this project was conceived months ago, it’s been living in the crazy part of my psyche. Many are the times I would play back the proposal and wonder: what was I thinking? Surely, this was insane. Up until the actual moment of installation, I questioned the process and for a moment of terror thought this might not work. Wrong, oh so wrong. So to the beginning of the story. A tiny powder room, square footage wise, 6 feet by barely 4. But competing with a powerful piece of inspiration. This is the mirror with the dragon frame. I needed to design something that could hold its own against such drama. And I came up with the idea of a magnificent dragon’s tail, unfurling itself across the walls. And that’s when crazy entered the picture. I’m currently having a love affair with mica, adding it as a layer to plaster finishes, and I thought, this was the perfect solution. The raw mica comes in blocks, and one splits the sheets apart. I could cut the scales out of mica. They would come alive as light hit and reflected around the room. I’m in love with the man in the moon

I have been trying to think of a clever, and perhaps less manic opening, to express just how wonderful this project was to paint. Right now, it’s great to be me! (Humble, n’est pas?) I’m in a truly happy place. I loved what I just finished; it came out exactly how I wanted it to and my client is delighted. Mrs. H is the perfect client. She gets me. And I get her! This may not be your cup of tea but I think you’ll agree, you are going to enjoy looking. The dome and I first met before renovations began at this beautiful home in Fairfield county. A dated , plain light fixture hung in a bare white dome. The fixture will be replaced with a more fitting one, filled with twinkling lights and I promise to post a picture in the fall when it is in place. Once the concept had been agreed upon, I prepared a scaled drawing. The drama would come from the rich dark blue background, grounded by soft dreamy clouds. Equal Parts Quirky and Classic

A request for whimsical lettering? Music to my ears. I met with the fabulous Joanna Farber, no stranger to the world of design. Farber, the former owner of Westport’s iconic Parc Monceau was looking for some lettered detailing. She had chosen a font named Gluttony Man for this location. I was also asked created a rebus that was an homage to her late husband’s career. At Ms. Farber’s home, I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Michael Pagett, the owner of Chetwode. Michael has recently opened his new showroom at 318 Strawberry Hill Avenue in Norwalk. Learn more about his exquisite cabinetry at www.chetwodecabinetry.com. Here is a fun trompe l’oeil window I created in the showroom. Have I mentioned that my work is never boring? A call from Virginia Blaker of Room Rescue (www.roomrescue.com) resulted in an unusual request. Virginia asked me to add my painting skills to a “chair-ity” auction for the Center of Family Justice in Bridgeport, CT. Virginia had a sturdy little high chair that had been originally painted by her grandmother in the early 1950s. It was time to give it a new face. Surprising Spaces in Unexpected Places

If I had my choice of my favorite places to paint, the list would probably not include a confined space that brought out my heretofore unknown claustrophobic angst or an outdoor project that put me at the mercy of the elements. This first space was a little nook carved out of the unused space under a curved staircase. My client had found the perfect spot to give her daughter a room to construct a Lego City, and keep it protected from her younger brother. Here’s the space waiting for me. The first request was easy. The room would be painted blue. I’d add clouds, a primitive rainbow in solid colored stripes and a few butterflies. Somewhere a few items were added: very realistic jets, helicopters, seagulls and bunnies. What would Lego City be without this? The room went from a cramped 30″ in height around a curved wall to a height of eight feet. Below are some closeups Here’s a picture of the finished space. Amazing Mica

I met the mineral mica several years ago. Mica infused plasters have been part of my portfolio for many years now. But recently, I got to rediscover Mica in a brand new way. Great big chunks of it! Glittering in amber, champagne, bronze pearl and gold tones. Let me show you my samples for this outrageously gorgeous powder room I just completed. The ceiling sample shimmers with layers of mineral. The wall finish has treasure pockets of mica buried in layers of mica infused plaster set on a metallic background. Here is a close-up of the ceiling with the perfect chandelier. Below is the finished room. I am so psyched about using mica more in the future. Love to know what you think about it. Making a Statement

I’m not sure when the trend began, but you’ve probably come across that one wall in a room painted a different color. The design term is “accent walls” or “focal walls.” Bold and dramatic and for sure, four walls of it would be too much! I recently heard them referred to as “statement walls”. As I think about it, a lot more goes into designing the perfect statement than just picking a color. I recently had the pleasure of working with the talented Lisa Fero of Trumbull. Check out her work at www.lisaferointeriors.com. Lisa has a great sense of color and her rooms look fresh yet layered with sophistication. My part in this room was to create a textured wall finish that would indeed make a statement. Here’s a picture of the sample Lisa chose. It has several layers of mica infused plaster as well as a smoky beige metallic paint. Here is the carpet, fabric and parts of the room that inspired this artisan finish. When My Worlds Collide

This month I’d like to share two related projects. Both have their roots in my first career as a sign painter. The skills I learned as that have served me well. The Art of Lettering has truly become a thing of the past. Computers now supply vinyl cut letters; digital production makes graphics and copy so accessible but there will never be anything as glorious (in my own humble opinion) as the moment when the lettering quill connects to the surface and a beautifully executed piece results. In the decades when I was “Sharon the Sign Painter”, my work was confined to commercial endeavors, my favorite being lettering names of boats on their transoms. Indeed, it was when the decorative painting arena started to include painted lettering (you remember little quotes on kitchen soffits) that I felt the tug to leave commercial sign writing behind and to stretch my aspirations towards what has become the most satisfying of second careers, being a decorative painter.
