It’s been three months since my last newsletter. I have conquered my fear of driving across the Tappan Zee Bridge since it’s part of my commute since this past August. I’ve wrapped up what we call Phase 1 at the Masonic Lodge project, that being the sky tray, eight columns and connecting ornament around the entire ceiling edge. And it would be an understatement to say I’m pleased with the results. I was honored to be trusted with this commission and though I was confident it would be successful, it has exceeded my expectations.
You will have to take my word that pictures don’t do it justice. I’ve had the sincere delight to watch my husband and friends JoAnn and Jack walk into the space for the first time since completion. Their jaws just dropped. JoAnn took this picture ) two days before completion so you’ll see a tiny bit missing. I think this shows you the enormity of the room (36’x 62’ x16’).
So a quick recap. This is the space as I first saw it.
The directive: change this space with paint to resemble a classic approach to the Temple of Solomon at this Masonic Lodge in Park Ridge, NJ.
Here’s the concept drawing of the tray that features a night sky on the North side changing into daytime on the South.
The largest concern I had was getting this rectangular design accurately onto the ceiling. New tool located. A three plane laser that wrapped around the room. The “x” on the floor is matched by an “x” on the ceiling. Lots of rolling the scaffold around but it’s accurate to within 1/8”.
Here’s a closeup of the night sky, with two custom designed Masonic constellations.
My neck and I were grateful when the ceiling was completed. Next came four columns on each of the long sides. They range from Doric, Ionic, Corinthia to Composite. Here’s my concept drawing,
followed by some details of this work.
I promise you, the magnitude of the work was sometimes daunting but finally it was done. Here’s a look of one half of the room completed.
Here’s a closeup of the last corner completed.
I had a wonderful surprise in early December. My husband and I were invited to a very formal installation of officers ceremony. It was a great pleasure to see many of the members of the lodge who hadn’t seen the last stage of work, plus many visiting brothers experience it for the first time. I was surprised (and that doesn’t happen often) with the receipt of an award of recognition for my work, presented by Mitchell Lane. What a distinct honor.
What comes next?
